Kigalia Canyon (5026)

Description: The Kigalia Canyon Trail #026 is 2.8 miles long. It begins at Forest Road #107 (Kigalia Guard Station) and ends at Forest Road #089 (Peavine Corridor). This trail begins at a small spring (Kigalia Spring) and travels down into Peavine Canyon opposite of Peavine Corridor Road (#089). This trail is named for Kigalia Spring on Elk Ridge at the beginning of this trail. Kigalia is an corruption of Kaa’yelii, a Navajo who lived and herded sheep in the area in the late 1800’s.

This trail is in designated wilderness. This trail is often combined with other trails in Dark Canyon Wilderness for in-and-out and/or loop backpacking trips. Other trails it maybe combined with include: #006 (East and West Dark Canyon), #007 (Trail Canyon), #023 (Brushy Knoll), #025 (Horse Pasture), #157 (Peavine Canyon), #161 (Rig Canyon) and #165 (Woodenshoe).

This trail is not regularly maintained and the trail maybe difficult to follow. Trail conditions vary widely with weather events and during spring runoff. Check with the Monticello Ranger District for updated information.

Difficulty Level: This trail descends approximately 984 feet from the trailhead at Kigalia Guard Station Road (#107) to Peavine Corridor (#089).

Usage: Light

Restrictions: Open to: Hiking and Horseback Riding.

Water: Water is only seasonally available from the spring at the start of Kigalia Canyon Trail. Users should carry water as well as systems to purify water. Users should contact the USFS for current water availability information.

Restroom: There is no restroom available.

Directions: From Blanding, head head south on US-191 S/S Main St and travel 3.9 miles. Turn right onto UT-95 N and travel 6.3 miles. Turn right onto Co Rd 228/Cottonwood and travel 4.9 miles. Slight left to stay on Co Rd 228/Cottonwood and travel 0.4 miles. Continue onto Elk Mountain (South Elks Road #092) and travel 14.5 miles. Turn left onto Elk Ridge Road #088 and travel 1.4 miles. Turn right onto Kigalia Guard Station Road #107 and travel 0.5 miles to Kigalia Canyon Trail #026.
